The Colchester Food Network is a not-for-profit organization that offers: Emergency food to those who need it. There are no requirements to qualify for help. Education and programming in: safe food handling, cooking on a budget, growing and processing your own food and meal planning. Education in schools and other community settings.  Education to the community on food insecurity. Advocacy for individuals and families who are food insecure.

Call office on Mondays leaving name and number in order to make an appointment for that week's food bank. Clients are called back Tuesday mornings with their appointment time. On your first visit, you will be asked to complete a registration form. Bring identification.

Drop-in centre that provides hot meals. Holds a community dinner during the Christmas holidays.

Ida’s Cupboard is located off the church parking lot between the doors. Non perishable items, “leave what you can, take what you need.” A community food cupboard for those in need.

Assist clients who struggle to pay their bills in full and on time, or who have lost their housing because of late payment in the past. There is no cost for this service. This is done in partnership with Income Assistance (Dept. of Community Services). Assistance creating a budget that works with the client’s income. Assistance with applications to landlords and Housing Authorities.  For people who Has a Mental Health Issue, Has a Disability, 2SLGBTQIA+ Community, Indigenous Peoples, People of African Descent, and/or Has a History of Homelessness.

The Home Energy Assistance Top-up (HEAT) Fund supports Nova Scotians in need with home heating cost during the winter months. For over 20 years, this program has helped keep thousands of individuals and families across Nova Scotia warm during the winter.

The Department of Opportunities and Social Development helps people live more independent and healthier lives by providing a range of social services. We work together with organizations across the province to administer social programs, including employment support and skills training, income assistance, affordable housing and youth and family supports. 

Utilities: Local Churches

There is no direct link here. Many of the churches in our community have a small fund that can help folks in a tough situation, and you're welcome to call around and ask the churches if they have that fund or the ability to help.   If you/ your family has a connection to a church then start by asking there.

The Lotus Centre is open for drop in on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday 9-12 and 1-3 if you'd like to check out Jackie's Closet.

Offers free clothing, shoes, toiletries and linens for adults.

All washrooms at Colchester-East Hants Public Library locations are now offering pads and tampons free to the public.
